JON LOPEZ ON TOGETHER WE CHILL

bounce mag’s jon lopez recently wrote this fabulous feature on what may just may have been new york city’s prime-time tournament 2009: together we chill …

“Where can you see the likes of Kareem “’Reem wit it, Rock wit it” Reid, Antawn “Anti-Freeze” Dobie, Kenny “Serious Satellite” Satterfield, John “Franchise” Strickland, “The Cab Driver,” “Baby Shaq” and other big names in the summer in NYC? Well, actually, Dyckman, Kingdome, Tri-State and EBC are some of the tournaments where you will find these guys gettin’ busy. But there’s another, less talked-about, tournament where one can find these elite ballers: Together We Chill. Located in the heart of El Barrio on 119th Street between 2nd and 3rd Avenue, TWC might be one of the most slept-on tournaments in the city.

K1X LMC FINAL THIS SUNDAY 3PM!

here’s the voice of the lower manhattan classic “40 cal” on the lmc in general, and the final coming this sunday, in particular …

“I stayed quiet about my tournament this summer and just listened to all the things people had to say. But honestly speaking, the playoffs have been off the hook. These same people who spoke about our tournament never even came through on a regular basis, just to let you guys know. While you guys talk about something you know nothing about, never been to or seen with your very own two eyes, we just sit there and laugh cause anyone who has witnessed the games out on Houston street has come back! Big shout out to every player who participated, DP, Mapp, K-Von, Gary Ervin, Bobbito Garcia, 1/2 man 1/2 amazing, Junie Saunders, Mookie Thomas, Murder Kill, Muff, Stixx, Karrem Bernard, D – Mac, Boondoxx, Tamel, Brian Gardenhire, Ty Grant, Sho, Donald, Lloyd, Mark Sanders, Mez, Larry, Kojo, Nicolas Leon etc … The Championship game is set for this Sunday at 3 p.m., with Uninvited Guest going up against Young gunnaz. These two teams have upset the best of the best in the tournament and deserve to be in the championship. Congrats to both!”

CRISPY CUTS ARE TWC CHAMPIONS 2009!!!

hail to the champs! last weeks the crispy cuts defeated t.o.s and were crowned “together we chill champions 2009″! the “cab driver” scored 30 points but mvp honors went to jesse sapp, who scored 20. in its 16th season (“from ’93 til infinity”, just like k1x) the harlem tournament is at the very top of the list when it comes to nyc hoops. a grass-roots neighborhood tourney, which has established itself as a “must” for players and fans, simply thru consistency, hustle, quality of play, word of mouth and pride (and not to forget a red hot dj/mc tandem). together we chill personifies new york city streetball to the core and k1x is proud to be a part of the family. click the asphalt-chronicles clip below for a highlight recap of what went down in the championship game …

PANDEMONIUM REIGNS SUPREME AT TOGETHER WE THRILL!

Yesterday’s game was a night to remember at Together We Chill! Major electricity among the crowd and players. Thrills & Chills in bunches. The first game of the semi-finals saw Kareem Reed’s & A-Butta’s squad “Piff Unit” go up against the talented youngsters from “T.O.S.”. An incredible energy spread from the court, as each move by Harlem’s own Kareem “Big Game” Reid and Adrian “A-Butta” Walton was celebrated by the hyped crowd. Piff Unit lead by 10 til the end of the 4th quarter, but T.O.S. hustled back into the game with ferocious full court D – and came up with some valuable possessions. Piff Unit was still ahead by one point (78:79) with just 25.3 seconds left on the clock. Kareem Reid sliced thru the paint and finished with a beautiful teardrop, bucket! 78:81. Then T.O.S. got fouled in traffic but only connected once from the charity stripe. But T.O.S. hustles up the rebound with just 5 seconds remaining. One pick for the point guard, get some space behind the three point line, throw a prayer, bottom of the net! It’s a wrap: 82-81 comeback victory for T.O.S.
Next semi-finals tonight at 6pm: don’t miss it at Together We Chill (119th between 2nd and 3rd avenue).

“PRIMAL FEAR” WINS CHIP & MVP AT PRO CITY!

k1x warrior darren “primal fear” phillip is the best big man in new york, period. on thursday night, dp underlined that fact and led his team to the fourth pro city victory in five years (!) – scoring 28 points and grabbing 17 boards in the process. some say defense wins championships. we say, champions win championships. so that’s what hustle, heart, fundamentals, force and smarts add up to: wins and a stack of mvp trophies. darren phillip, who won the tri-state award for most valuable player last year, personifies the results of work ethic like no other.
congraulations darren, we’re very proud of you!

L-LOVE – REMEMBER THAT NAME!

13 year old hoop phenomenon jerron love recently made his debut at “together we chill” up in harlem. a 13 year old! versus grown ass men! j-love was guarded by the “the zen master”, first reluctantly, then closely. jerron’s team, that also featured darren “primal fear” phillip and the glover brothers, was up by a dozen or so when “black diamond” caught this lob from the youngster in the final seconds of the game. he only played a couple of minutes in total and failed to score a point, but raked in 3 assists and displayed lebron-like swag. something tells us we’ll be hearing more of jerron love in the future …

HARLEM FUNK

“together we chill” tournament on 119th street has been kicking up a lot of dust this summer – thanks to the hustle of commissioners dj Tedsmooth, g-bush and big tato. currently considered one of the hottest spots in the city, it’s no wonder new york’s top dogs are turning up in bunches. yesterday’s talent featured darren “luxury tax aka primal fear” philipp, “black diamond”, “stixx”, “the zen master”, “t-mac”, the glover bros. and a 13 year old ballhandling prodigy, who suited up and hyped to 300+ crowd with three funky assists, including a last second alley to the games most electrifying player, black diamond. darren philipp took home the “w” while he displayed his full skill set of fundamentals. stixx had a 40+ game in losing effort.
