Basketball is Hip Hop. And Hip Hop is Basketball. This new blog segment (borrowed from Greg Tanner’s feature of the same title in UK’s Fade Away magazine) sheds light on some of hip hop’s most interesting basketball-related lyrics. Come back next week for a fresh dose! Today: “Empire State of Mind” (Jay-Z)

If Jeezy’s payin’ LeBron,
I’m payin’ Dwyane Wade!

“To explain, Young Jeezy did a tune called “24, 23″ in which he says “I used to pay Kobe, now I pay LeBron.” He’s basically saying he used to pay $24,000 for a kilo of cocaine (Kobe’s number being 24) but now pays $23k (LBJs number). So what Jay-Z is claiming is that he’s so big in the game that he only has to pay $3k (Wade’s jersey number) for a key. Wow!
